Grams to cups converter

Quick answer: Grams measure weight and cups measure volume, so the answer depends on density: a cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, while a cup of granulated sugar is about 198 g. Cups for common gram amounts, worked out from the King Arthur Baking Ingredient Weight Chart (grams per US cup, spooned and levelled).

Pick an ingredient, then enter grams or cups. Weights per cup differ for every ingredient.

Where do these numbers come from?

Checked Oct 23, 2026. King Arthur lists 1 cup of all-purpose flour as 120 g. 100 g ÷ 120 g = 0.833 cup, which this converter shows as 0.833 cups and rounds to the nearest kitchen measure, 7/8 cup.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the ingredient: flour, sugar and butter weigh very different amounts per cup.
  2. Enter the weight in grams.
  3. Read the volume in cups, tablespoons and teaspoons, based on the King Arthur Baking chart.

Why there is no single grams-to-cups number

Grams measure weight and cups measure volume, so the answer depends on density: a cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, while a cup of granulated sugar is about 198 g.

Grams to cups charts by ingredient type

The same King Arthur Baking figures, grouped the way recipes use them. Each cell shows the exact decimal for that chart value and the nearest 1/8 cup. Weights are for ingredients spooned into a US cup (236.6 mL) and levelled; scooping flour straight from the bag packs it down and can add 15% or more by weight.

Butter is the exception that does not need a chart: a US stick is 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons or 113 g, so 1 cup of butter is 227 g. Milk, buttermilk and other water-thin liquids are about 227 g per cup in the same chart. For butter, eggs and anything sold by the stick or the piece, use the dedicated converters in the full list.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams in a cup of flour?

About 120 g for all-purpose flour (King Arthur Baking chart).

How many grams in a cup of sugar?

About 198 g for granulated sugar.

How many cups is 100 grams of flour?

About 0.83 cup, a little under 7/8 cup, using King Arthur Baking's 120 g per cup for all-purpose flour. Other flours differ, so pick yours in the converter.

How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?

About 1.01 cups of granulated sugar, using King Arthur Baking's 198 g per cup. Brown sugar, packed, is denser at 213 g per cup, so 200 g is about 0.94 cup.

How many cups is 250 grams of flour?

About 2 cups (2.08 cups) of all-purpose flour, using King Arthur Baking's 120 g per cup, spooned and levelled. Charts that use 125 g per cup give exactly 2 cups.

Is 1 cup of flour 100 grams?

No. A spooned and levelled US cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 120 g (King Arthur Baking). 100 g is about 0.83 cup, or 3/4 cup plus about 1 1/3 tablespoons.

How many cups is 500 grams of flour?

About 4 1/6 cups (4.17 cups) of all-purpose flour at 120 g per cup. Bread flour is close to the same weight per cup; whole wheat flour is slightly lighter (113 g per cup), so 500 g is about 4.4 cups.

How many grams is a stick of butter?

A US stick of butter is 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons or 4 ounces, which is 113 g. Two sticks, or 1 cup, weigh 227 g.

Should I spoon or scoop flour into the cup?

Spoon it in and level it with a knife. Scooping straight from the bag packs the flour, so the same cup can hold 20 g or more extra, which is enough to make baked goods dry. Weighing in grams avoids the problem.
