The exact definition
Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, one avoirdupois pound is exactly 453.59237 g, and an ounce is one sixteenth of that: 28.349523125 g. So grams ÷ 28.3495 = ounces, and ounces × 28.3495 = grams. For mental math, 1 oz ≈ 28 g and 100 g ≈ 3.5 oz.
Kitchen weights you will meet
| Item | Grams | Ounces |
|---|---|---|
| US stick of butter | 113 | 4 |
| Half pound | 227 | 8 |
| One pound | 454 | 16 |
| Standard 250 g pack | 250 | 8.8 |
| 500 g bag of pasta | 500 | 17.6 |
| 1 kg bag of flour | 1000 | 35.3 |
Ounces vs fluid ounces
An ounce (oz) is weight; a fluid ounce (fl oz) is volume. One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL, and only for water does it weigh close to one ounce (about 1.04 oz). For flour, sugar or honey, the weight of a fluid ounce is very different, so convert volume with the grams to cups converter.
Troy ounces are different
Gold, silver and other precious metals are priced in troy ounces of 31.1034768 g, about 10% heavier than a kitchen ounce. A "1 oz" gold coin weighs 31.1 g.
Pounds and kilograms
| Kilograms | Pounds | Pounds + ounces |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 1.1 | 1 lb 1.6 oz |
| 1 | 2.2 | 2 lb 3.3 oz |
| 2 | 4.41 | 4 lb 6.5 oz |
| 2.5 | 5.51 | 5 lb 8.2 oz |
| 5 | 11.02 | 11 lb 0.4 oz |
| 10 | 22.05 | 22 lb 0.7 oz |
A kitchen scale that switches units removes the rounding entirely: weigh in grams for baking and you avoid the fractions.
Exact definitions
One avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g and one pound is 16 ounces, or 453.59237 g. So 100 g = 3.53 oz and 250 g = 8.82 oz. These are weight ounces; fluid ounces measure volume and are covered by the cups to ounces converter.
Kitchen tips
Most digital scales switch between grams and ounces, and grams are more precise for small amounts such as yeast or salt. A 1 g change is visible on a gram scale but rounds away in ounces.
