How to measure without a tablespoon
Use three level teaspoons for each tablespoon. For half a tablespoon, measure one teaspoon plus a half teaspoon. Measuring spoons are meant to be filled level: for dry ingredients like baking powder or salt, scoop and sweep off the excess with a knife. A heaped spoon can hold half again as much, which matters for leaveners.
Watch out for Australian tablespoons
US and UK recipes use a tablespoon of about 15 mL (3 teaspoons). Australian recipes use a 20 mL tablespoon, which equals 4 teaspoons. If an Australian recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of baking soda and you use a US tablespoon, you will be about a quarter short.
Abbreviations
Tablespoon is written tbsp, Tbsp, T or tbs; teaspoon is tsp or a lowercase t. A capital T almost always means tablespoon, so read handwritten recipe cards carefully.
Definitions: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C (US customary liquid volume). US units; UK imperial pints, quarts and gallons are about 20% larger.
