Where do these numbers come from?
- NISTSP 811 exact unit definitions (1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 lb = 453.59237 g)current edition
- NISTHandbook 44, weights and measurescurrent edition
- King Arthur BakingIngredient Weight Chart (kitchen tools)retrieved Oct 23, 2026
Checked Oct 23, 2026. 1 US cup is exactly 236.5882365 mL (NIST SP 811), so 250 mL = 1.057 cups.

An easy way to remember it
A gallon has 4 quarts, a quart has 2 pints and a pint has 2 cups. So a quart is 2 × 2 = 4 cups, and a gallon is 4 × 4 = 16 cups. A quart of milk or a quart of broth is the same 4 cups, since this is volume, not weight.
Quart vs liter
A US liquid quart is about 946 mL, a little smaller than a liter (1,000 mL). A liter is about 4.23 US cups. A 32 oz container of yogurt or stock is exactly one quart.
Dry quarts and UK quarts
The US dry quart, used for things like berries at farm stands, is about 1.10 L, roughly 16% larger than a liquid quart. The UK imperial quart is about 1.14 L, which is 40 imperial fluid ounces, or about 4.8 US cups. Recipes almost always mean the US liquid quart.
Definitions: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C (US customary liquid volume). US units; UK imperial pints, quarts and gallons are about 20% larger.
