The math

A cup holds 16 tablespoons, and each tablespoon holds 3 teaspoons, so 16 × 3 = 48 teaspoons per cup. Working the other way, one teaspoon is 1/48 of a cup, or about 4.9 mL.

When you would actually use this

It is handy for scaling small amounts. If a recipe makes a cup of spice blend and you want just a few teaspoons, each teaspoon is 1/48 of the batch. If you need 1/3 cup and only have measuring spoons, that is 16 teaspoons or 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon. For dry ingredients by weight, see the grams to cups converter.
