How many grams are in a cup of sugar?

Quick answer: Granulated sugar crystals pour and settle evenly, so a level cup is consistent at about 198 g. Brown sugar is measured packed (pressed into the cup until it holds its shape), which is why it comes in heavier at 213 g.

1 cup of granulated white sugar ≈ 198 g (King Arthur Baking). Packed brown sugar is heavier and powdered sugar much lighter.

Where do these numbers come from?

Checked Oct 23, 2026. King Arthur lists 1 cup of all-purpose flour as 120 g. 100 g ÷ 120 g = 0.833 cup, which this converter shows as 0.833 cups and rounds to the nearest kitchen measure, 7/8 cup.

Why sugars weigh differently

Granulated sugar crystals pour and settle evenly, so a level cup is consistent at about 198 g. Brown sugar is measured packed (pressed into the cup until it holds its shape), which is why it comes in heavier at 213 g. Powdered sugar is fine and fluffy with cornstarch mixed in, so a cup holds only about 113 g, and sifting makes it lighter still.

Common conversions

100 g of granulated sugar is about 1/2 cup (0.51 cups). 200 g is about 1 cup. 1 kg (a typical bag size outside the US) is about 5.1 cups. A US 4 lb bag (1.81 kg) holds roughly 9 cups.

Swapping one sugar for another by volume changes sweetness and texture; swapping by weight is closer, but brown sugar adds moisture.
