500 g of flour by type
| Flour | g per cup | 500 g in cups | Kitchen measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 120 g | 4.17 | 4 cups + 2.7 tbsp |
| Bread flour | 120 g | 4.17 | 4 cups + 2.7 tbsp |
| Whole wheat flour | 113 g | 4.42 | 4 cups + 6.8 tbsp |
| Cake flour | 120 g | 4.17 | 4 cups + 2.7 tbsp |
How to measure 4 1/6 cups
Measure 4 level cups, then add 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons (one cup is 16 tablespoons, so 1/6 cup is 2 2/3 tablespoons, and 2/3 tablespoon is 2 teaspoons). Spoon the flour into the cup and level it with a straight edge; scooping straight from the bag packs the flour and can add 20–30 g per cup, which adds up to a noticeably drier dough across four cups.
Why the answer depends on the flour
Grams are weight and cups are volume. Whole wheat flour contains bran and is lighter per cup in King Arthur’s chart (113 g), so 500 g of it fills more cups (4.42). If a recipe was written in grams, the most reliable option is to weigh it: 500 g is 500 g whatever the flour. Many European bread recipes use 500 g of flour as the base for one loaf.
